Verticillium wilt?

I trimmed a dead limb out of my sugar maple and the cross section had a black dotted ring. Just thought it looked odd. Could this be verticillium wilt and if so is there anything I could do?

What brings you to the Garden Talk Blog?
I have a sugar maple tree in my back yard. At the end of last year I had one branch near the top that did not drop its leaves which concerned me ( I thought the branch was dead) so I took my knife (like you have said many times on your show) and skimmed the branch and it still had green under the bark. So I left the branch alone to see how it would do this spring. It appeared to bud, but no leaves came. I was just wondering what to do or what else to look for. I did skim the branch with my knife again this spring and it still had green in it. Is this branch dead and should I cut it out?

Welcome Nick! Be sure to join us in the chat room during the radio show on Saturday mornings (6am-9am on WHIO 1290AM 95.7FM). Sign in at http://gardentalkblog.com/ . When the Main Room pops up (if it doesn't pop up, just click on it at the bottom of the screen) click on the double boxes (located between "Main Room" and the minimizing "-"), and join in the fun and education (probably in that order).
